To build a relationship of trust with your site's visitors, you hopefully will have followed our earlier advice about the tone and style of your content, including contact information for your visitors to contact you and biographical information about you and your company.

Another level of reassurance to provide your potential customers is samples of your work, photos of your products and testimonials from existing clients.

Backing up your claims with verifiable proof demonstrates clearly to your visitors your skills, experience and trustworthiness.

A client list is an excellent way to provide backup to your claims. Your list need not be exhaustive, just representative of clients who have benefited from your product or service.

If appropriate to your type of product or services, provide a portfolio of your work or a catalog of products. Visitors to your portfolio or catalog will use this section of your site to gain an understanding of your style and approach, or to examine whether you have previous experience with projects similar in size or scope.

Finally, ask your clients, when they give you positive feedback about your product, service or customer support, if you can use there comments for promotional purposes. Respect your client if he or she says no. And respect their privacy if they agree - the last thing you want is your client to start getting spam email because their email address is displayed prominently on your website. Your client may agree to have their comments used, but not their full name and email address, or they may agree to having their comments on your website but ask that any requests for references be directed to them through your company. Used carefully, your client's comments about your company can be a persuasive tool for potential customers. But remember - don't make up testimonials and don't use your clients' comments without their prior approval.
